Proximity Sensor
What it is - A sensor that detects nearby objects without any physical contact. It emits electromagnetic radiation beam for any changes in the field or return signal.
Mobile Use - The sensor placed at the front of any smart phones to lock the screen by touch of our ears while answering the call. We could also noticed that while speaking phone display turns off after the call when we take off the phone from ear the screen will unlock automatically.
Gyro Sensor
What it is - It is also known as angular rate sensors or angular velocity sensors, device that sense angular velocity based on Earth gravity.
Mobile Use - It detect rotational motion of the device. The compass tool shows the directions based on the Gyro Sensor.
Accelero Sensor
What it is - Sensor that measures the rotational motion of the device.
Mobile Use - The Accelero Sensor is mainly responsible for viewing photos and/or videos in portrait or landscape position.
Oleophobic Coating
What it is - Anti-reflective coating for display devices.
Mobile Use - It clearly resists the fingerprint impression on the display devices. Ensure viewing clear picture without any blur effect. Apple Corporation uses this technology in their phone displays.
Smart phone Display & Touch
Liquid Crystal Display [LCD] - It is the common type of display for all mobiles. Thin Film Transistor [TFT LCD] produce better image quality and higher resolutions. The visibility will get affected when using directly under sunlight or any other sources of light. Big TFT will consume more power. But it is cheap to manufacture and can be
found in budget and lower end specification phones.
In-Plane Switching [IPS] - It is superior than normal TFT LCD in the form of viewing angle & low power consumption. Costlier and can be found in high end specification phones.
Resistive Touchscreen - It has two layers of conductive material with small gap between that acts as a resistance. When phone is touched either with finger or stylus the two layers will meet at the point of touch thus enabling circuit at that point. The contact point has been recognized by mobile’s processor or chip and passed to mobiles OS. Then action will get triggered by the point of touch.
Capacitive Touchscreen - A layer of glass coated with a transparent conductor (like indium tin oxide). When it is touched an interruption will get created in the screens electrostatic field. which is detected by phone’s processor or chip. Then action will get triggered by the point of touch. Experiencing capacitive touchscreen is much better than resistive touchscreen.
Organic Light Emitting Diode [OLED] - This technology has a layer of organic material (carbon based) between two conducting sheets (an anode and a cathode). Which in turn are sandwiched between a glass top plate (seal) and a glass bottom plate (substrate). When electric pulse is applied the two conducting sheets, electro-luminescent light is produced directly from the organic material sandwiched between. Brightness and color can vary depending on the electric pulse. OLEDs are better than LCDs in form of color reproduction, fast response times, wide viewing angles, higher brightness and extremely light weight designs.
Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode [AMOLED] - This type displays for mobiles and are rapidly gaining popularity in top end smartphones. It has all the attributes of an OLED display.
Super AMOLED - An advanced version of AMOLED displays. It is built with touch sensors on the display itself, as opposed to creating a separate touch sensitive layer (as in capacitive touchscreen).
Retina Display - Used by Apple Corporation for its high resolution (640 x 960 pixels) IPS LCD (with backlit LED) used by them in iPhone4. The pixels cannot be individually identified by the human eye, thus making the display super sharp and brilliant.
Gorilla Glass - It is a special alkali-aluminosilicate glass shield with exceptional damage resistance that protect mobile displays from scratches, drops, and bumps of everyday use. Many companies are now using Gorilla Glass to make their mobile displays more durable and reliable.
